1 Exwood, Maurice Burials & their Monuments in the Old Churchyard of Ewell in Surrey: a Study
Ewewll Bourne Hall Museum 1997 0953067505 / 9780953067503 First Edition Card Wraps Near Fine No Jacket
Apart from owner's name in pencil on front cover & in ink inside front cover, pretty much as new. 72pp, b&w photographs, plans. A4. 0953067505. 215g. 'Near the centre of the old village of Ewell stood the mediaeval church, often drawn & painted by local artists & by visitors. William Holman Hunt, during one of his visits to his uncle William Hobman, painted the [church] for Sir George Glyn. The old church was demolished in 1848 after the construction of the present building nearby. But public protest succeeded in saving the tower, which is now cared for by the Ewell Tower Preservation Trust. In the grounds surrounding the old church, villagers for hundreds of years interred & mourned their departed relations. Many of the dead were commemorated by a monument - some simple, some grand examples of the stonemason's craft. The earliest surviving gravestone records a burial in 1733. Here as elsewhere, the maintenance of old churchyards & cemeteries is an increasing problem. The families of those buried there are no longer present to tend the graves: neglect may lead to clearance of the site - at best by creating an open space through lining gravestones along the edge, & in the extreme by making the land available for development. Ewell's old churchyard, however, is in the hands of the local authority, who care for it & maintain it as a historical site. These monuments, silent witnesses around the ancient tower, form an important survival of our heritage & are well worth preserving.' Includes an appendix indexing names recorded on monuments, listing name, age, year of death, & position & grave number on plan.
