Red cloth has some light rubbing, spine extremities bumped; internally a clean, bright copy; dustwrapper has edgewear, particularly top edge which has small areas of loss. 184pp, b&w photographs, drawings, maps. 200x215mm (landscape). 0853313571. 680g. 'In the largely nineteenth-century city of Cardiff, capital of Wales, & the industrial towns of its hinterland, there is a great wealth of architecture, not the least of which is derived from the Industrial Revolution itself. This book concentrates on the buildings of the eighteenth & nineteenth centuries, with excursions into the pre-industrial period & the twentieth century. 165 photographs illustrate the rich variety of buildings of considerable merit - many of them in danger of demolition - in an area covering 400 square miles. Cardiff possesses an exotic castle, with a history spanning sixteen centuries, a fine & only slightly younger cathedral at Llandaf, & a superb array of civic buildings in the Neo-Classical style. But the splendid contribution of nineteenth-century developers & their architects must not be overlooked either - Cardiff is essentially a Victorian city. The valleys that make up Cardiff's hinterland - Ely, Taf, Rhymni, & their tributaries - with their dramatic contrasts of stark hillsides invaded by narrow fingers of settlement, have their own legacy of ironworks & coalfield buildings & chapels that testify to the development of one of the world's most vigorous industrial cultures.'
